Verbal Arrows

He yanks at her,
Leans her against the wall,
He needs to witness her misery,
As testimony to his cruelty.

She doesn't fight back;
Apologizes again and again.
Impulsive confessions are futile;
Her words sound like a lie.

He flips her nightie
To inspect his property.
Too tired to get away
A scream chokes in her throat.

Breath tightening,
Fist punching palm of hand ready,
He accuses her
Of using him.
She looks remorse; shaken.

She flashes her eyes,
With luxuriant lashes,
In submissive surrender.
That's how she survives
Collecting verbal arrows.

A shadow of a real monster
With darkened eyelids.
He doesn't mean to be unkind
Why ruin the moment;
Always gets what he wants.
